Arbor Day
The
Magnolia Forest Garden Club recently celebrated Arbor Day by planting a
Camellia sasanqua 'Leslie Ann’ in a garden bed near the Oak Alley
entrance of the neighborhood. The club chose the 'Leslie Ann'
because it is a very attractive shrub that is cold hardy, will tolerate
quite a bit of sun, and is a reliable profuse bloomer. The
flowers, which appear from fall to midwinter, are semi-double white
blossoms with dark rose to magenta edges. A presentation was made
to club members by Pam Anderson and Jane Freeman on the history and
growth of Arbor Day into worldwide observance. MFGC is a

SEPTEMBER 2011 MEETING
The Magnolia Forest Garden Club began its 2011-12 year with the September
meeting and salad luncheon at the home of member Diane Anderson. Co-hostesses
were Kiyomi Boyer, Betty Rose, and Flo Johnston. President Johnnie Ruth
Rogillio presided over the business meeting and the membership discussed
the many projects and field trips planned for the coming year. The meeting
also included two guests, Jill Courseault and Judy Cougle, who were introduced
and are interested in becoming members.
Billie Carpenter gave a very interesting and informative horticulture report
on the southern tradition of “Pass-along Plants.” These gifts from the
garden are extremely easy to propagate; well adapted to the local environment;
often hard to find for sale; and have been handed down by friends, neighbors
and relatives for decades. These plants often generate fond memories of
the gardener who gifted the plant and many are living links to the gardeners
in one's family tree.
